In Hungary there was a time
When playing fiddle was a crime
In a village south of Budapest
One family stood out from the rest
Trees would shake and Children spin
Moved by the tones of their fiery violin

In a canvas tent on a Friday night
The family played to a crowd's delight
A gang of hussars rode through town
And burned the celebration down
The daughter losing all her kin
Escaped with just her smoking violin

In a port on the Adriatic Sea
Playing for pennies on the street
The gendarme threatened her with jail
On a pirate ship she chose to sail
Up to the crow's nest climbing higher
Summoning the wind with her fiddle full of fire

Passing ships would see the sight
Of a ghostly vision in the night
The fearsome song of a shrieking bird
