about

Chris' group Old Songs put ancient greek poems to music. He told me this tale from the Homeric Hymns.

lyrics

Sailing on the Ionian Sea
A week away from Tuscany
We spied a wealthy man on the promontory
He wore princely garments fit for a king
With a crimson cloak and glittering rings
the captain said he’d fetch a fine reward
So we seized him, bound him, and took him aboard

Sailing on the Ionian Sea Sailing on the Ionian Sea

But the ropes unraveled and fell right away
His dark eyes smiled not a word did he say
The coxswain shouted "You fools can't you see,
This is some kind of god we must let him go free!
If we don't release him he'll raise up a storm
Hurricane winds around us will swarm"

Sailing on the Ionian Sea

The Captain screamed "Are you out of your mind
We've got a rich man whose family we'll find
I'm the Captain this is the deal
I give the orders you take the wheel
Hoist the sail this is our lucky day
When we find his family a ransom they'll pay"

Sailing on the Ionian Sea

As the ship started moving fast
Grapevines appeared up and down the mast
The bowsprit sprouted with flowers and fruit
From the crow's nest came a whistling flute
The rigging was crawling with slithering snakes
Giving the bravest of pirates the shakes

Sailing on the Ionian Sea

The nobleman changed to a lion just then
And with a great roar he frightened the men
The terrified pirates to the good coxswain ran
Begging him to steer the ship back to land
The lion leapt with outstretched claw
Tearing the captain apart with his jaw

Sailing on the Ionian Sea

The fear-struck pirates jumped overboard
Becoming dolphins for evermore
The lion turned into a noble again
Said to the coxswain "Have courage dear friend,
I'm Dionysus the son of Zeus
Good fortune be with you I turn you loose"
